Rhodes – the pearl of the Mediterranean
Rhodes is one of the largest Greek islands on the territory of which the eponymous city is located.
In ancient times it was an important trading and transport point on the map of the Mediterranean Sea. Retaining this title to present day, Rhodes became also a famous tourist centre. Visitors are attracted by the modern level of hotel service and clean coastline, as well as archaeological monuments and ruins.During your holiday, it's worth visiting the main places of interest, mainly the Old Town – the entire territory of which is a World Heritage site. In Old Rhodes you'll find a medieval fortress – the residence of the Knights Hospitaller. Many popular places are located near the city: The Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the ancient theatre. The city guide also advises you to visit the beautifully preserved stadium, similar to the buildings of ancient Olympia.The main public transportation of Rhodes is buses. The territory of the island is small, so you can always call a taxi if need be. For example, with an average cost of a taxi ride of 25 Euros, travelling through the whole island will cost you about 65-70 Euros. A popular and purely touristic and entertaining mode of transport is horse riding and taking short trips on donkeys.
