Heraklion – the city of legends and fables
The city of Heraklion is a port that has played an important role in trade between the Mediterranean countries since ancient times.
Located on the island of Crete, it became a gateway for ships coming from Asia to Europe. The modern Heraklion is the administrative centre on the map of the island and one of the largest Greek cities.The main places of interest of Heraklion are the complex of buildings of the Palace of Knossos. The complex is currently undergoing archaeological excavations, restoration, but most of its territory is open for visits. Tourists can admire the baths and other structures, decorated with frescoes from the Minoan civilization. Among the important religious monuments of Heraklion it is worth noting the cathedrals of St. Mark, St. Titus and St. Catherine. Other popular places are the Lion Square with the Morosini fountain, the Koules fortress and the old Arsenal building.
